From Tweets to Trends: Bibliometric Insights on Social Media and Knowledge Management

Abstract

The junction of social media and knowledge management has developed into one of the main areas of study, representing the transformative power of digital communication both in organizational processes and knowledge-sharing practices. This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the intersection between social media and knowledge management from 1999 to 2024. It explores the evolution of research trends, identifies key thematic clusters, and visualizes international collaborations in this field. Through co-citation and timeline network visualizations, we highlight 13 thematic clusters of research, each representing distinct aspects of social media's role in knowledge sharing and organizational learning. Notable clusters include Knowledge Management, Social Media, Internet Technologies, and Sustainability, among others. The study also maps out cross-national collaborations and their contribution to advancing this interdisciplinary field. The analysis reveals significant growth in publications and citation counts, with a notable shift toward exploring advanced technologies such as AI, big data, and machine learning in the context of knowledge management. This paper identifies critical research gaps, particularly the need for integrating emerging technologies and adopting interdisciplinary approaches. The findings offer practical insights for organizations seeking to enhance knowledge sharing through social media platforms and suggest directions for future research.
